Faculty Fellowship Program

Application (Microsoft Word)
Sample letter of understanding (Microsoft Word)

The Office of Academic Affairs is able to make a limited number of Faculty Fellowships available to partners of newly hired tenure-related faculty. These appointments carry a one-time stipend of $10,000 (plus OPE) and, in some cases, academic rank. The program is designed to provide an initial professional “landing site” allowing time for the individual to seek continuing employment in the local area as well as providing them with opportunities to interact with colleagues in the host department, to use university libraries, and to attend seminars and colloquia. The professional qualifications of the Faculty Fellow applicant must meet the needs of a host department, and the host department must provide $3,000 (plus OPE) of the $10,000 stipend as well as office space and related support. The amount of the fellowship and job expectations may be supplemented by the department and dean in consultation with the candidate and head of the host department. The Office of Academic Affairs will provide $7,000 plus OPE for the Faculty Fellow appointment.

Complete and submit the Request for Consideration for Faculty Fellowship form to the Office of Academic Affairs.

When approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the host department initiates the Faculty Fellowship letter of understanding (sample follows) on the department letterhead. Please do not initiate the Faculty Fellowship letter of understanding without written confirmation of approval from the Office of Academic Affairs. When the Faculty Fellow returns the letter of agreement, the host department distributes the copies as indicated at the bottom of the letter: Dean’s Office and the Office of Academic Affairs.

When the signed letter of agreement is in place, the host department submits a Request to Offer Academic Appointment with a vita and Affirmative Action Compliance Statement. (It is acceptable to indicate “Spousal Support Hire” on the Affirmative Action Compliance Statement.) Submit the packet through the regular channels. A Notice of Appointment and Contract will be issued. When the Contract is returned signed and the person is appointed in HRIS, a Budget Change will be issued by the Office of Academic Affairs transferring funds to the index of the hiring department.
