PROMOTIONS IN RESEARCH RANKS

In order to process a research rank promotion, the Office of Academic Affairs/Office of Vice President for Research asks for an abbreviated dossier similar to the file submitted for a tenure-related promotion and tenure consideration. The dossier should include:

  • Letter of support and justification from the director (in the case of institutes or centers) or the department or division head.
  • Current vita

The dossier should be submitted to the institute, center or department’s promotion evaluation committee. The committee will solicit internal evaluation letters that will be added to the dossier. External reviewers are rarely utilized. The committee dossier is then forwarded to the dean or director for the final review before the recommendation is made to the Office of Academic Affairs/Office of Vice President for Research.

Promotion consideration can occur because of change of scope in the position or increase or change in duties and responsibilities. Promotion consideration for Research Assistant to Senior Research Assistant should occur no earlier than during the fourth year of service. Promotion from Research Associate to Senior Research Associate is usually considered during the sixth year of service to be effective during the seventh year.

The promotion from Research Assistant to Senior Research Assistant (without tenure) would be viewed as similar to the promotion of an Instructor to a Senior Instructor. The standard salary increase that accompanies this promotion would be $600 for a 9-month employee and $733 for a 12-month employee.

The promotion from Research Associate to Senior Research Associate (without tenure) would be viewed as similar to the promotion of an Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. The standard salary increase that accompanies this promotion would be $1,800 for a 9-month employee and $2,200 for a 12-month employee.

Research Assistant and Research Associate are independent appointment tracks. Movement from Senior Research Assistant to Research Associate would be a change of appointment requiring Affirmative Action review of the UO's internal management directive and possibly a new national search.

Please refer to the Faculty Handbook concerning appointments to research faculty positions. This gives the criteria for each of the research ranks used at the University of Oregon.
